Warming gift for babies

There’s nothing like a warm, homemade blanket on a cold winter’s day. Premature and sick babies at Werribee Mercy Hospital are being treated to just that thanks to a donation by Knit4Charities, an online organisation of knitters and sewers who make blankets, clothing and toys for people in need.

The nationwide charity recently gifted the hospital’s special-care nursery 85 knitted blankets and some cot quilts. The hospital’s 16-cot special-care nursery looks after sick newborns and premature babies.

Nurse unit manager Jennifer Anning says the blankets will be given to the new mothers once their babies’ stay at the special-care nursery comes to an end.

“Generally, if it’s the blanket that the baby had in the nursery, they like it for sentimental value,” Ms Anning said. “It’s lovely for the families.

“There’s some beautiful blankets … it was fantastic to get the donation.”

Jenny Hinton, of Knit4Charities, said the organisation made monthly donations to specific causes.

The Newport resident nominated Werribee Mercy for this particular donation after getting back into knitting while sitting in waiting rooms. “I had lap band surgery years ago and I joined a Yahoo support group – then looked into craft groups and it came up with this,” she said.
