Werribee footy club seeks more women

The Werribee-based Glen Orden Football Club is aboard the bandwagon gathering up women to play the national game, Australian Rules.

And it wants more women to join it. The club’s division 3 women’s team is on the hunt for more players to guarantee its inclusion in the Western Region Football League next season.

Coach Eddie Bryson said that since three other women’s clubs launched in the area, the Glen Orden team had lost half its members.

Its women played their first season this year, and Bryson is hoping the club can attract more players to continue on.

“There really aren’t any requirements,” he said. “Anybody willing and wanting to give it a crack can.”

Bryson, who has been a part of Glen Orden Football Club since 1987, said the club had a great sense of community and was very family- oriented.

“It’s just a joy to be around the club.”

Jade De La Rue, captain of the 2016 team, has been playing Aussie rules for 12 years.

“I live and breathe it; footy is one of my priorities in life,” she said. “It’s a great way to get fit, and it really brings people together.

“The culture at Glen Orden is just great and being in the third division means that anyone can play.

“Half our team had never actually touched a footy before joining.”

Anyone over the age of 15 is invited to join.
