As a prostate cancer specialist nurse, Cindy Ogluszko sees more than most the effects the illness has on people.

This year will be the Werribee residents third time participating in The Long Run, an initiative by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia that encourages individuals to walk or run 72 kilometres over the month of July to raise funds for research.

“I see over 100 men a year with either a new diagnosis or for ongoing support following their treatment for prostate cancer at Western Health,” Ms Ogluszko said.

“I see the affects this diagnosis and treatment have on men and their families.

“By supporting men through the long run I am giving my support not only within the confines of the hospital but for the long haul, it’s only a small gesture to let men know they are not alone in their journey.”

Ms Ogluszko said her experiences as a nurse have taught her how “resilient men with prostate cancer are”.

“I am proud to be a prostate cancer specialist nurse who has the privilege of supporting these men and their families,” she said.

“Start a conversation with your family members, know your risks and have that discussion with your GP about having a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test from age 50, or from 40 if you do have a family history of prostate cancer.

“Together we can help make prostate cancer history.”
