More than 200 volunteers rolled up their sleeves at Victoria University’s (VU) 2024 Community Tree Planting Day on Friday, August 9.
A total of 2500 trees were planted across three sessions, including 17 different species.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas, Point Cook MP Matthew Hilakari and Tarneit MP Dylan Wight were among the attendees.
Volunteers from partner organisations included Western Bulldogs, ICN, PEXA, Aspect, Greater Western Water and Western Chances – as well as local community members from Club 60, and some very young volunteers from Werribee Childrens Centre, along with their educators and team.
Teams from Koala Clancy and Iramoo Nursery also contributed expertise and work in the lead-up, and Koala Clancy guided attendees on how to plant on the day.
Since 2022, VU has now planted 12,500 trees at its Werribee Campus, an initiative supported by the state sovernment’s More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West program, which aims to plant 500,000 trees to increase tree canopy coverage in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said the trees will ensure a greener, cooler and more welcoming environment for the future members of the community.
