Volunteers at the ready

The Asian Business Association of Wyndham Inc is extending a helping hand to the community.

The not-for-profit organisation, also known as ABAW, has more than 1000 members who live in the Wyndham municipality.

The association received a $12,000 community grant from Wyndham council last month, to run a free 12-month program of Wushu, Tai Chi and Qigong workshops at schools, sports hubs and community centres.

The association’s president Larry Zhao said that although the COVID-19 pandemic has put an end to these plans, ABAW was still keen to run a community health program.

“We have been thinking, is there anything we can do at the moment to help local residents solve problems?” he said.

Mr Zhao said this had prompted the association to put together an initiative titled the Wyndham Emergency Assistance Program.

“We have a group of volunteers ready – if we can’t do tai chi, we still want to be able to help the community,” he said.

“For example, if elderly people can’t go shopping, or get medications, we can help them out.

“Even if they want to talk, we can chat with them on the phone.”

Mr Zhao said ABAW wanted to hear from residents who would like help, plus people of all cultural backgrounds who could offer assistance to other,s during the pandemic.

“We know there are lots of good people in the community who want to help,” he said.

“Because Wyndham is so big, we need people from different suburbs.”
