Views sought on Indian hub

WYNDHAM HAS A STRONG INDIAN COMMUNITY AND HAS LONG BEEN HOST TO CULTURAL EVENTS SUCH AS DIWALI.

Do you want to see an Indian cultural precinct in Wyndham?

The state government is funding a council-run feasibility study to determine if an Indian cultural precinct would be viable in Wyndham, with an online survey asking residents where they’d like to see the precinct located, and what form they’d like the precinct to take.

The feasibility study comes 18 months after the state government announced $500,000 for an Indian cultural precinct in Wyndham.

Point Cook resident Sudhir Juneja, who advocated heavily for the precinct in 2015, said he was particularly keen to see the Indian hub located in Point Cook or East Werribee, which are easily accessed by the M1 freeway and would be ideal for tourists on their way to the Great Ocean Road.

“We need it in Wyndham, it is a huge tourism opportunity,” he said.

“The money [that has been allocated] is not a large amount, but any amount is a good start. The state government is funding $500,000, and Wyndham council should also add in some money, and the community and local businesses should also come and partner.”

Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the study would help decide if the Wyndham community was in support of an Indian cultural precinct.

“Our community is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds and council supports opportunities to share these cultures,” Cr Barlow said.

“Members of the Wyndham community have previously shown their support for such a precinct, with several petitions in favour of it gathering almost 1000 signatures.”

The feasibility study is expected to be completed in July 2017.
