A Hoppers Crossing Sikh temple will be the first to host a Victoria Police forum aimed at bridging the gap between police and the Indian community.
Victoria Police will hold a series of information forums across Hoppers Crossing, Craigieburn, Blackburn and Dandenong in coming weeks that will cover a range of topics and issues relating to policing to help increase understanding of how Victoria Police undertakes its work.
In particular, the forums will feature presentations by expert and specialist police, including family violence advisors and the missing persons unit.
Tailored for the Indian community, the forums will be delivered in partnership with the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, Federation of Indian Origin Multi-faith Organisation, Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha and Sankat Mochan Samiti.
Acting Superintendent Darren Cooper said the forums provided the opportunity to have a two way conversation and inform the community about issues that matter.
“We know that people are concerned about a number of issues – such as drugs, family violence, mental health and missing persons – but they may not have the means to learn more about it,” Acting Superintendent Cooper said.
“These forums are a way for people to speak to their local police and learn more about the processes involved in reporting and investigating these crimes or incidents.
“We know that to effectively engage with the community, we need to go out and meet in familiar and welcoming settings so that people feel comfortable in having a conversation.”
The first will be held next Wednesday, November 16, from 7-8.30pm at the Sikh Temple Hoppers Crossing Gurudwara, 417 Sayers Rd, Hoppers Crossing.
