A Tarneit resident is calling on Wyndham council to prioritise the rehabilitation of Dohertys Road.
Lacey Dunweg said she uses the “terrible” and “very dangerous” road everyday, but is forced to avoid it when there’s rain.
The road is particularly bad between Derrimut and Tarneit roads, where a dam, creek and dips in the road’s surface result in flooding.
“When I can see the road, see the potholes, it’s a lot easier to try and dodge them than when they’re underwater and you can’t see them,” she said.
“I don’t want to hit a pothole, because I’ve done that in the past with my last car, I hit a pothole and actually cracked my rims, so I’m a bit wary of it.”
Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said council is undertaking preliminary design of the road, which would see it shifted south towards the Emerald estate and duplicated.
“The new road alignment will include a 45 metre-wide road reserve which will include the reconstruction of Dohertys Road from Tarneit Road to match into recent intersection works with Sapling Boulevard,” Mr Thorpe said.
“It is anticipated that the reconstruction and duplication of Dohertys Road will take about two years to complete.
“In the interim, maintenance works will continue within the low lying areas of Dohertys Road, including through the ‘dips’ where recent culvert upgrade works have occurred.”
Ms Dunweg believes the road should be fixed sooner.
“I’m sure they’ve had multiple people comment and request and put in petitions to get it fixed,” she said.
“The amount of times they keep patching the potholes, trying to fix stuff, within a week, two weeks, they’re already dug up again.
“I know at the moment they’re starting resurfacing on Sayers Road, that road is in way much better than Dohertys Road, so I think it definitely should have been prioritised.”
