The upgrade of a community centre in Point Cook is expected to kick off in April, with Wyndham council confident residents and community groups will benefit from the improvements.
Work on the Point Cook Community Learning Centre in Cheetham Street will be followed by upgrades on centres in Tarneit and Wyndham Vale.
Since the Point Cook centre opened in 2008, Point Cook’s population has soared by more than 90,000 people.
Sections of the Point Cook centre will be unavailable for hire during the work.
Community groups who use the centre have been redirected to centres in Point Cook or Truganina.
The Point Cook centre’s library and kindergarten will remain open.
Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the idea behind the upgrade was about making the council more accessible and responsive to the community.
“While you can already do lots of things at your local community learning centres – like pay your rates, register your pet or submit a service request with council – these upgrades will mean that we can trial other services from these buildings,” he said.
The council will also trial holding meetings at the upgraded community centres.
The Point Cook centre cost $5.5 million when it opened in 2008.
