Two police officers charged with negligent manslaughter

On Thursday, September 11, detectives charged two police officers with negligent manslaughter following the death of a man in Hoppers Crossing last year.

The two police officers – a 29-year-old male constable and 45-year-old male sergeant, both from North West Metro Region – have been suspended from Victoria Police since July last year.

The charges relate to the death of a 35-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, who was arrested at the corner of Heaths and Tarneit roads, Hoppers Crossing, on July 15 2024 and died in hospital eight days later.

One of Victoria Police’s deputy commissioners, Wendy Steendam, addressed the charges.

“I understand the news today will be concerning and difficult for many in the community, however I want to reassure them that Victoria Police does not shy away from taking action to uphold community trust and confidence in our organisation,” she said.

“The overwhelming majority of our police do the right thing day in and day out and provide exemplary service to the community. Today’s update should not take away from their efforts more broadly.

“However, it is vital that where incidents such as this occur, they are investigated thoroughly regardless of a police officer’s rank, position or tenure.“

Both officers have been bailed and are scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 12.
