Two arrested over signal equipment theft, damage

Police have arrested two men following the theft and criminal damage of signal equipment that caused major disruptions to the Werribee train line yesterday.

It is alleged that the men forced entry to a signal box in Altona North, stealing signal switches and transformers valued at more than $16,000.

A 38-year-old Hoppers Crossing man and a 31-year-old Werribee man were arrested about 1am, after they were detected by Metro network security and surveillance officers allegedly attempting to steal equipment in Altona North.

Both men are currently assisting police with their inquiries. They are expected to be charged with theft, criminal damage and trespass offences.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw a silver Holden Commodore station wagon with a trailer attached loitering in the Altona North area on June 22-23 to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
