A group of Wyndham residents gathered at Geelong Road, Werribee last Wednesday, to mark a century since the World War I Avenue of Honour was planted at the site.

Last Wednesday, the gathering – which included members of the Wyndham Community Activists Group (WCAG) – watched as a young Illawarra Flame Tree was planted beside the road.

A member of WCAG and Wyndham Heritage Recovery, Lisa Heinrichs, said that sadly, there were not many trees left from the original Avenue of Honour, as many of them were removed when the Sneydes Road interchange was built. She said there were now only around six to eight of the original Avenue of Honour trees left standing.

“Today we are planting a tree that will hopefully be here within 100 years’ time,” Ms Heinrichs said.

“We hope this encourages the planting of a new Avenue of Honour.”
