Truganina’s first toy library launches

Truganina South Primary School launched their new library which allows parents to borrow toys from the school’s community hub.

The school’s community hub leader Vicki Haynes said they were “lucky” to win a grant through Community Hubs Australia which gave them the funds needed to stock the library.

“It’s a service provided to our school families, it’s free membership so the families don’t have to pay any money and they have access to brand new toys, games, puzzles and that they can borrow for two weeks and then return and borrow some more out,” Ms Haynes said.

My Haynes said that the library will give financially disadvantaged families the opportunity to access free toys.

“They’re [the toys] the first teachers in child’s life so this just sort of supplements them at home to be able to do that,” she said.

There are currently 220 toys in the library but Ms Haynes said community members can “absolutely” donate new and used games to add to the school’s collection.

“We’ll give them a good clean, I’m happy for donations,” she said.

The library will open weekly and will be operated solely by volunteers.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our volunteers, they’ll learn the system, they’ll also run it basically,” Ms Haynes said.

The toy library is the first of its kind in Wyndham and there are potential plans in the future to expand the service to families outside the school.
