Tower mural a tall order

A project to transform the heritage-listed water tower in Werribee into a giant work of art needs some very creative thinking.

Arts Assist, a not-for-profit group that raises money for cultural and artistic projects, has plans to paint the disused 18.5 metre-tall Tower Road standpipe with a mural depicting a theme of historical significance to Wyndham.

The group is calling for expressions of interest in the project until August 12.

Arts Assist chair Jan Goates said the concrete water tower, which was built in 1913, acted as a gateway to Wyndham and had the potential to become a significant artistic and tourist landmark.

“This community art project will help make Wyndham a vibrant, creative and engaging place,” Ms Goates said.

“We hope that it will celebrate the heritage and local significance of the water tower and the important role it played in the growth of the local township. It will contribute to the image of Wyndham as a great place to live, work, recreate and visit.”

Artists Assist is a partner with Southern Rural Water in the venture, which it is estimated will cost about $146,000.

The water tower project will join other colourful works that adorn Werribee landmarks.

In 2017, a joint venture between Wyndham council and the Telstra saw a colourful mural transform the brick exchange building on Market Road.

Wyndham safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said it was hoped the mural would help to prevent graffiti.
