The municipalities of Wyndham, Whittlesea and Maribyrnong have been named among the top six areas where residents donate unwanted clothing and household goods to a national recycling company.

SCRgroup, which has 1500 collection points around the country for fashion and household items, gives the donated materials another home locally or internationally.

What cannot be reused is either turned into rags or converted into an alternate fuel called biofuel.

Data released by SCRgroup last week showed that Wyndham residents helped to save 936,987 kilograms of clothing and household items from landfill between April 1, 2020 and March 21, 2021.

SCRgroup communications and business development executive Alexis Todorovski said this made Wyndham the top charitable and environmentally-conscious city in Australia.

Whittlesea (which saved 814,656 kilograms of goods) and the city of Maribyrnong (which saved 472,893 kilograms of goods) were also in the national top six donation sites, along with the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Ms Todorovski said that SCRgroup’s clothing hubs within the Point Cook Town Centre helped to generate 30 per cent of all the Wyndham donations alone.

“Wyndham’s population is growing rapidly, with an increase of 4.7 per cent in the last year,” she said.

“Where there is a high population, there is usually a lot more clothes to throw away and we are seeing the correlation in this council.”

Along with population growth, Ms Todorovski said that the prominent location of clothing hubs and support from councils to raise public awareness contributed to high rates of donations.
