Meet the newest Werribee Lions president.

Tom Henderson, 66, will take the reins from outgoing president Kerry Cook this Friday when the club hosts its annual Changeover ceremony.

The retired policeman joined Werribee Lions about six years ago and was first tasked with helping to sell Christmas cakes, which is one of the club’s biggest annual fundraisers.

He has spent the past year as first vice-president, helping out Ms Cook and learning the ropes along the way.

“As a policeman you have an introduction to Lions and other service groups, and I wanted to get involved in that.

“It’s a very distinguished club … but, like a lot of others, we are an ageing club and we’re always on the lookout for younger members.

“As a president, that’s what I’m looking at this year, to try and attract younger people and form committees.”

Mr Henderson, who as president gets to choose where the proceeds of the club’s annual golf day will be directed, has already nominated Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Critical Care Unit as the beneficiary.

He also enjoys the small acts of kindness that the Lions Club brings to the community.

“We were contacted by an elderly lady, she was in her late 80s and had a problem with her garden, we did a bit of weeding, noticed a few loose bricks on her window ledge and fixed them up – that’s what we’re about.

“We’re not just sausage sizzlers, we do a lot of other work.”
