The Wyndham community has banded together to raise a record amount for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

More than 500 volunteers, with their local fire brigades, were involved this year in fundraising across Wyndham Vale and Werribee. Together, they raised $79,138.60.

Werribee Fire Brigade first lieutenant Darryl Wells was rapt with the result.

“We ran out of collection tins at lunch time,” Mr Wells said. “People were quite forthcoming with their money.

“We had a lot of people coming out with jam jars filled with loose change that they had collected over the year, and they just emptied it into our tins. We also had many generous people freely giving $50 notes at intersections.”

Mr Wells, who has been involved in the appeal for 46 years, said the Werribee and Wyndham Vale communities had always given generously.

“We can’t do this sort of thing without the support of the community: those who collect money, those doing administrative work from the station and, of course, the people in the community giving money,” he said.

“It’s been a great team effort.

“We support this appeal because it really secures our future by looking after our kids – the next generation.”
