A little helping hand can do wonders for those in need.

That’s the impetus behind Lightpoint Church’s annual Helping Hand Day, which gives families in need a free food hamper, quality pre-loved clothes and new and second-hand toys for children.

The event first began in 2012, when 50 hampers were handed out to help those in Wyndham who were doing it tough over Christmas. The day has grown exponentially since then, with more than 300 hampers distributed at last year’s event.

Project manager Melissa Smile said volunteers had spent the past three months packing the hampers in preparation for this year’s event.

All food and clothes used in the hampers are donated or purchased through financial donations made by parishoners and members of the public. This year, Lightpoint Church has also spent $1000 to purchase toys to include in the hampers.

Ms Smile said while many people were busy buying Christmas gifts and making plans, there were many others struggling to cope with the increased cost of living or a job loss.

“It’s a lot of work, but on the day you see everybody happy and smiling.”

The 2019 Helping Hand Day will be held on December 1 from 10am-midday at Point Cook Senior College, corner of Boardwalk Boulevard and Bergamot Drive, Point Cook.

Recipients must bring their pension or healthcare card to be eligible for a hamper.
