West heads for a tree change

The western suburbs could be on their way to becoming greener.

Greening the West – a collaborative program being run by councils, water bodies, state government departments and advocacy group LeadWest – has launched the One Million Trees project.

The program is funded by the federal government through the 20 Million Trees Program.

The goal of Greening the West is to plant up to one million trees and mixed native plantings across the region by the end of June, 2017.

LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said two areas in Wyndham had been selected as sites for tree planting – the Werribee River Nature Link and the Point Cook Coastal Park.

Both were identified in the Regional Catchment Strategy as suitable sites.

“The trees are being planted during the winters of 2016 and 2017 but preparation work has already started,” Mr Rowley said.

He said weeding, soil preparation, mulching, seed collection and nursery growing of the trees were under way.

“In the Werribee River Nature Link, our project partners are planting up to 200,000 mixed native species trees,” he said.

“We are still working with Parks Victoria to finalise the number of trees to be planted in Point Cook Coastal Park.

“We are mindful that the park has been altered by agricultural practices but still contains a diverse range of vegetation.”
