Westbourne Grammarians Football Club will celebrate three decades on Saturday, February 26.

The club – which was previously known as Old Westbourne AFC (Australian Rules Football Club) – was planning to hold its 30th anniversary event in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation twice.

President David Hudson, whose brother Paul Hudson is also a committee member, has been involved with the club since 2002.

He was previously a student at Westbourne Grammar School, which has campuses in Williamstown and Truganina.

“The club has been built from a group of friends, who went to high school together as Westbourne students, who wanted to keep playing football together,” Mr Hudson said.

“Over the years, there has been a lot of effort from a lot of people, including Ivan Board, he was president of the club for a long time and a real stalwart of the club, he was a real driving force behind that.”

In 2004, the club won its first premiership, in both seniors and reserves.

“They are all there to play football, but for the friendship and connections you make as well,” Mr Hudson said.

“We’re an amateur club, so no-one gets paid for playing football – the best player and the worst player are on the same standing.”

At the moment, the club field two senior teams and runs a women’s program, which is looking for new recruits.

“Our focus now is, in five years we want to have five teams with 500 members,” Mr Hudson said.
