Rehearsing for the Wyndham Theatre Company’s upcoming show The Vicar of Dibley has been one big laugh for the cast and crew.
Point Cook woman Renee Belsey, who plays the role of vicar Geraldine Granger, said performers usually became accustomed to the jokes in a production as rehearsals progressed.
“But with this one, it’s been getting funnier and funnier,” she said.
Belsey said the show was based on three episodes from series one and two of
The Vicar of Dibley television series, “with some added bits as well”.
“What I enjoy is revisiting all the hilarious bits you know and love, and reliving them,” she said.
Belsey is a perfect fit for the main role of the sassy vicar, originally played by Dawn French.
Not only did Belsey grow up in Britain, but she once watched an episode of The Vicar of Dibley being filmed.
Belsey, a mother of three, said her family was “a very theatrical” one, with her husband also rehearsing for a musical to be staged in Essendon.
In addition, one of their sons is starring in an Altona production and their five-year-old son Oliver is writing his own musical.
The Vicar of Dibley will be staged from August 17 to 26 at the Crossroads Theatre, corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road, Werribee.
Tickets, adult: $25, concession: $22.
