Whether it’s taking part in school committees or helping out the local theatre company, Lorraine Gillet is there to give a helping hand.
The Wyndham Vale resident has volunteered with Iramoo Community Centre for the past three years – and been president for two.
“It’s not a huge drain on time. You get a lot more out of it than you put in, and you don’t know what doors will open for you when you volunteer. Lots of doors have opened for me,” Ms Gillet (pictured) said.
“It’s a great centre to be attached to. It’s close to home, and everyone’s really nice – it’s been very welcoming.
“I think everyone’s looking for that connection to something, especially those nearing retirement like I am. You want to plan to have something to do when you’ve lost all those hours at work.”
Ms Gillet chairs meetings, keeps an eye on the centre’s operations and actions any changes that need to be made.
She was previously secretary of Werribee Theatre Company, and has helped with occasional care organisations and different school committees.
Ms Gillet is one of more than 330 council volunteers across Wyndham whose efforts and commitment will be recognised on May 10 at a special morning tea as part of National Volunteer Week.
