Two Point Cook Secondary College students have used their business smarts to create an award-winning app idea.

Year 10 students Vivian Nguyen and Chloe Pio tied for first place in Victoria University’s annual I Plan A Business competition recently, impressing judges with their app, Teenage Taxi.

Vivian said Teenage Taxi, which won the year 10 or 11 group best business plan award, was an app-based taxi service for teenagers under 18.

Using the app, parents specify just three approved locations – for example, school, a sports club or a grandparents’ house – for which trips can be pre-booked and pre-paid.

“It’s safe and you can’t sneak out to other places,” Vivian said.

Chloe said the app would be ideal for working families with teenagers.

“My parents are both full-time workers so it’s hard for me to go out to places or get picked up,” she said.

The pair were among 363 business students from 29 high schools across Victoria to put their classroom theories into practice by producing business plans for their big ideas.

Vivian said they were shocked to be named equal winners.

“We thought we wouldn’t have a chance to win,” she said.

Chloe added: “We were happy just to make the top four.”

The year 10 students, who are studying year 11 business management as an accelerated subject, said they were impressed by their fellow winners from Berwick College, who pitched a “Pay It Forward” restaurant at which patrons pre-purchase a meal for someone in need.
