Tee off for youth sporting stars

The Sanctuary Lakes Foundation is calling on residents to take to the green later this month in a fundraiser for its youth scholarship program.

The foundation will host its annual golf day at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club on October 28, with all proceeds going to scholarships for high-performance young people in the west.

The 18-hole event will include a pitching competition as well as a sausage sizzle, auctions, raffles and a dinner at the end of play.

The Sanctuary Lakes Foundation has been running since 2000 and was originally set up to provide financial assistance for the development of young elite golfers within Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club.

Since then, the foundation has evolved to support a wide range of high-achieving young people.

Foundation chair Brett Mackie said there were currently 10 people being looked after through the program, including Olympics middle-distance runner Luke Mathews.

“We’re not looking for people who are elite – we’re looking for kids who have a goal, or a dream,” he said.

“We help them out financially.”
