A new $5.4 million fire station in Tarneit was officially opened by the state government last week.

Located at 417 Derrimut Road, the station has been operating since November 2019 but the official opening was put on hold during the bushfires of 2019-20 and COVID-19 pandemic.

Firefighters from the Tarneit fire station supported strike teams and incident management teams across Victoria and New South Wales during the 2019-20 bushfire season.

Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly and Parliamentary Secretary for Police and Emergency Services Paul Edbrooke attended the station opening last week, along with Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA representatives.

The new station spans about 4900 square metres. It has four engine bays, plus facilities and bedrooms for up to six career firefighters per shift.

It also includes an administration office, day room, kitchen, gym and operational support areas, such as a breathing apparatus cleaning area, laundry, drying room, workshop and turn-out areas.

The Tarneit station will support the Hoppers Crossing station, which will continue to operate as a CFA brigade providing support to areas including Truganina, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.

Ms Connolly said Tarneit’s population was expected to double, reaching 64,000 residents by 2031.

“Tarneit is a rapidly growing area and I strongly welcome this investment into essential firefighting services to serve the local community,” Ms Connolly said.

Mr Edbrooke said the Tarneit station was an exciting and important development in the rapidly growing western suburbs.

“Firefighters play a vital role in protecting life and property, and it’s crucial that they have the facilities to carry out their duties,” he said.
