Tarneit stadium courted

A new sports stadium could come into play in Tarneit.

Wyndham council has sought funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria for a feasibility study into a new stadium to complement Eagle Stadium, a Basketball Victoria facility master plan has revealed.

To be called the Tarneit Indoor Sports Stadium, the facility is earmarked for land along Sayers Road and is expected to initially include four multi-purpose courts, with a view to expanding to eight courts in line with population growth.

The report stated that despite the recent $45 million redevelopment and expansion of Eagle Stadium, development of basketball courts in Wyndham has not kept pace with population growth and demand.

It predicted that five additional courts will be needed in Wyndham by 2020, and another five by 2025.

Currently, Wyndham has 14 basketball courts – 12 at Eagle Stadium, and two at MacKillop College.

The city is serviced by the Werribee Basketball Association, whose membership has grown 44 per cent in the past four years to 3030 members.

The Basketball Victoria report, which was officially launched on Monday at Eagle Stadium, identified priority locations throughout Victoria for basketball facilities and provided information to help
organisations to develop a business case for new facilities.

Wyndham was identified among 12 areas in the state most in need of more basketball courts, with neighbouring municipalities Melton, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank also named.

“Council previously advised that [Eagle Stadium] approaching 85 per cent capacity would be a trigger for the commencement of planning for a facility,” the report stated.

“An initial study in 2011 recommended the redevelopment of [Eagle Stadium] as stage one for the city, with stage two to involve the development of a second sub-regional indoor stadium to be developed with a minimum of four courts and the capacity for expansion.”
