Tarneit Station will be home to a new bus interchange that will allow for more frequent service, the state government has announced.

The interchange will be built in the southern car park and better connect the local community to schools, shops and jobs.

Commuters will also receive new parking, more bicycle parking, and lights and CCTV for increased security.

Public transport minister Ben Carroll said the interchange would provide more options for people to get where they need to go.

“The upgrades will transform the way people travel and ensure the transport network meets the needs of the growing community for years to come.”

Works on the car park will begin mid-2022 and construction on the new bus interchange will follow later this year.

Following Southern Cross Station, Tarneit Station is the busiest on the V/Line network, with more than 1.24 million commuters using the station each year.
