Tarneit arrest after alleged Melbourne assault

A Tarneit man is among four people charged over an alleged assault of several French backpackers in Melbourne overnight.

Investigators said a group of nine travellers was listening to music under Princes Bridge when they were approached by some youths at 1.30am.

A fight broke out, during which four of the backpackers were allegedly assaulted.

Police arrested four males on the Southbank Promenade shortly after the incident.

A 20-year-old Tarneit man has been charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon and other assault-related offences. He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 10.

A 14-year-old Braybrook boy will face a children’s court charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon, other assault-related offences and commiting an indictable offence while on bail.

A 16-year-old Moonee Ponds boy and 15-year-old Lalor boy have been charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon and other assault-related offences. They will appear at a children’s court at a later date.
