National Wesfarmers retailer Target Australia will move its headquarters to Wyndham next year, and the council is confident more big name companies will follow its lead.

Target headquarters is relocating from its Geelong base after 92 years to come to Williams Landing by Christmas next year, 2018.

In a statement, the company confirmed the move, but would not reveal the exact location of its new site, nor details of its building project.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-2018, with the corporate office development providing “great new amenities in a modern and contemporary facility”.

Wyndham council’s acting chief executive Kate Roffey described the news as “fantastic”, saying it means more local jobs and a positive flow-on effect into the Wyndham community.

“It is not surprising that a large company, such as Target, has seen Wyndham’s potential and the positives in being based here,” Ms Roffey said. “Our convenient location … as well as our mixture of metropolitan and country lifestyle, are some of the same drawcards that have made us one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country.”

She noted council’s work in promoting “positive development” around Wyndham, citing the development of Werribee’s CBD and the East Werribee employment precinct, as indicating the Target announcement is the first of many.

“For several years now, we have been clear in our belief that Wyndham has a key role to play in the ongoing economic growth of the west,” Ms Roffey said. “This latest announcement is evidence that our hard work is paying off.

“Target’s choice to locate their new national headquarters in Wyndham shows that our municipality is a destination of choice for major corporates,” she said.

“We are open for business and expect to see other major players following Target’s lead.”
