Swap, don’t shop

If you have unwanted kids clothes, books and toys and you want to help the environment, The Big Swap for Little People is the perfect event to attend.

Residents can bring up to ten clothing items in good condition to swap out for other outfits.

“As a mother I know how quickly children grow out of clothes and get over their toys,” Werribee River Associations Sustainability Project Officer Jess Fairfax said.

“Rather than having to spend hundred of dollars each time we need to size up, it makes much more sense to work together with my local community to share and swap what we’ve got to refresh the wardrobe and toy box.

“Through creating initiatives that promote a share economy, like the swap, we hope to help develop more sustainable lifestyles, that reduce what we buy and then have to dispose of, ultimately improving the health of our waterways, local environment and community.”

Ms Fairfax said the swaps are a “great opportunity to refresh the wardrobe”, but also a good time to meet neighbours and other parents.

“It helps to break social isolation, while moving away from the consumer and fast fashion culture that is having such a negative impact on the environment,” she said.

The event, on Friday November 25, will begin with drop off at 4pm, followed by the swap at 4.45pm.

“We will also have the Wyndham Repair Cafe present, repairing toys and electronics, and mending clothes,” Ms Fairfax said.

“We’ll also have plenty of entertainment including a Sustainability Storytime and African Drumming Workshop.

“Come on down to the Talliver Terrace Park in Truganina with a plastic-free picnic for what will be a fun and thrifty afternoon meeting new friends.”
