Wyndham’s Geet Gaba says she’s passionate about helping community members.
To help women in the municipality who are struggling, or have struggled with family violence, Ms Gaba is one of the organisers of a group seeking to assist women learn essential courses to get them back in the workplace.
“Every second day I would speak to somebody who was looking for help,” she said.
“The other issue which I have noticed is that the callers were either not working, or they used to work years back and just looking after kids.
“I thought, ‘let’s bring up this idea of having short courses’, like first aid, food handling, so they can get something in their hands and start some kind of job.”
Attendees also receive advice on what career paths and options they have available to them.
Ms Gaba said her inspiration to work for the community is from her background and her roots.
“My father was a community worker, I lost him in January, I decided to come out and do [more] work,” she said.
“If you’re doing the work, there might be people needing help but don’t know you, that’s why it’s important to [spread awareness].”
The group is run by a network of volunteers and meet on the last Saturday of every second month.
