A group of women hosted a Biggest Morning Tea in Wyndham on Sunday, February 20 to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts.
The morning tea, held at The Garden Feast in Werribee, raised between $3500 to $4000 for the Cancer Council.
One of the organisers, Rose Clemente – who ran the 161 Hair Room in Laverton for more than 30 years – said they were still calculating the total raised from the raffles and games held on the day.
Ms Clemente and friends, Mary Sfameni from Forever Young Werribee and Marie Cee from Intimo, planned the event.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced them to rebook the Biggest Morning Tea three times across nine months.
Sixty women attended the event, during which guest speaker Belinda Russell talked about her journey with breast cancer.
“It was great to bring women together to support a great cause, that’s empowering in itself,” Ms Clemente said.
Ms Clemente was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in early 2021, while her mother Anna is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the uterus.
In addition, Ms Clemente’s aunt Tina died from breast cancer.
“I was really close to her and she suffered for five to six years, she didn’t want to die,” Ms Clemente said.
Ms Sfameni’s friend Cathy also died from cancer, while aged in her fifties.
Ms Clemente said she would like to thank A Current Affair reporter Sam Cucchiara for compering the morning tea and Maree Planner from The Garden Feast for her support.
