Wyndham’s green thumbs are being called into action ahead of National Tree Day next weekend.
Wyndham council is hosting a community planting event on Sunday, July 28 at Cambridge Reserve in Hoppers Crossing where 3000 trees are expected to be planted.
Wyndham mayor Jennie Barrera, encouraged all local residents to get their hands dirty and join in.
“This is a great opportunity to reconnect with nature, help cool the climate, provide homes for native wildlife and make your local community a happier and healthier place to live,” Cr Barrera said.
“Over 26 million trees have been planted across Australia by volunteers since National Tree Day first began in 1996 and we are excited to support the goal of getting another million native plants in the ground this year.”
Wyndham councillor Robert Szatkowski said National Tree Day was aligned with council’s environmental goals.
“Through events such as these, our annual tree planting program and our commitment to have at least one tree planted in every suitable nature strip by the year 2030, we’re on track to making Wyndham greener,”Cr Szatkowski said.
Along with Sunday’s council run event, a special School Tree Day will be held on Friday, July 26, with an estimated 3000 schools participating.
National Tree Day is an initiative of environmental not-for-profit Planet Ark and is the country’s largest tree planting and nature care event.
The Wyndham National Tree Day community planting event will be held from 10am to 12pm on Sunday, July 28.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves and weather appropriate clothing.
Hoppers Crossing Rotary will be providing a free barbecue lunch and there will also be a coffee van and information stalls on site.
