Forget the three “Rs”, students at Tarneit Senior College have been focusing on the three “Ps” in their classroom.

VCAL intermediate students from the school have had lessons on planting, propagating and pruning as part of a community garden project.

VCAL co-ordinator Huy Le said that after 10 weeks of growing vegies and herbs, students harvested their crop and donated 15 boxes of fresh produce to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray.

Mr Le said the donation helped to feed hundreds of people for an entire week.

“The group was met [at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre] with warm greetings and gratitude, as the centre doesn’t get fresh green vegies donated very often,” he said.

The students have also been using some of the herbs from the garden in cooking sessions at the college.

A greenhouse is being built at the school, for students to continue learning about gardening.
