Students at Thomas Carr College learnt how to manage stress and develop a deeper sense of connection as part of last week’s Mental Health Week.
All students were invited to download Smiling Mind, an app that teaches mindfulness and meditation skills.
Student wellbeing team leader Susan Ward said stress was the number one issue facing many students.
“For this reason, the college adopted the theme of ‘letting go of stress’ as a basis for this year’s Mental Health Week activities,” Ms Ward said.
“Many students recognise that they are tense or worried about a specific situation, such as an upcoming exam, when the deeper issue is how they handle stress itself.”
She said stress management skills could be taught to students. Once they understood what stress was and how to manage it, they could cope more effectively with any difficulties that arose.
The school also ran a number of presentations and programs at different year levels to encourage students to de-stress.
Mental Health Week ran from October 4-10, with the aim of educating and engaging Victorians in mental health issues.
