Footy runs in Mick Jefford’s veins.
The 61-year-old, who played for Braybrook Football Club in his younger years, joined the Werribee Masters Football Club 26 years ago because he missed the game – and hasn’t looked back since.
“Once you play football, you miss it when you stop,” Mr Jefford said.
“A club like this, you know everybody … you know more guys by their nicknames than you do by their real names.
“It’s more the social aspect of it for the guys down here, I think. It helps you keep fit and you enjoy playing the game, but it’s more the social side of it.”
Club secretary John Crennan said: “It’s a club where, once people are there, they stay around.”
Werribee Masters has more than 70 players aged 35 and above on its books. The club, which counts former Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow as one of its past players, is gearing up to celebrate its 35th anniversary with a reunion to coincide with the season opener.
Mr Jefford said at least 100 past players – with some flying in from interstate – would come down to the home ground to see the club’s three teams in action.
The Werribee Masters Football Club will host its 35th anniversary reunion on Saturday, April 7, from 1pm at Wyndham Vale Reserve, Honour Avenue, Wyndham Vale. For more information, call Mick on 0420 361 399.
