The campaign against the proposed Werribee South youth detention centre is gaining traction, with the state government “committed” to considering alternative sites.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas and youth affairs minister Jenny Mikakos met with Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby, mayor Henry Barlow, councillor Heather Marcus and a number of community members today to discuss the Hoppers Lane location.
Ms Grigsby said it appeared the state government was genuinely open to the idea of an alternative site.
She said the council had this week received the site selection criteria and were currently assessing the viability of a number of sites – both in and outside of Wyndham – for the $288 million youth prison.
“It’s certainly moving in the right direction,” Ms Grigsby said.
“The community’s opposition to the development of a youth detention centre at Werribee South was clearly outlined to the Minister and local member.
“Whilst the minister continued to explain the state government’s need and rationale for the proposed youth detention centre, it was pleasing to see that they are listening to community concerns.
“The minister has committed to considering alternate sites, in consultation with council and other agencies.”
Ms Grigsby said both Mr Pallas and Ms Mikakos have agreed to meet with the group again to continue discussions, but a date had yet to be set.
