A new children’s centre at Tarneit West is a step closer to becoming a reality thanks to a state funding boost.
The project will receive $4 million through the government’s Children’s Facilities Capital Fund and the Growing Suburbs Fund.
Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan welcomed the grants, which he said would help to “build the infrastructure our growing community needs”.
“Once complete, this centre will provide the fast-growing suburb of Tarneit with access to early education and care services, including kindergarten rooms, maternal and child health services, consulting rooms, a gathering space for the community, and programs to suit all ages,” Cr Gilligan said.
“A key component in the design of this building is sustainability – and we will ensure that we are minimising the negative environmental impact at all stages, from design, to construction, and once complete and operational.”
Urban futures portfolio holder Intaj Khan said the centre was an example of council planning ahead, delivering infrastructure in line with residential development, so that services are available when the community needs them.
“Population forecasts predict that by 2031, Tarneit’s population will grow by 53,000 residents to 75,000,” Cr Khan said.
“It’s important that we have the services and infrastructure in place before we experience this population boom.”
The Riverdale Community Centre is expected to be opened next year.
