A state-of-the art performing arts centre and an expanded gymnasium with a show court will be ready in time for the 2017 school year at Thomas Carr College.

The Tarneit school is halfway through a mammoth $22 million redevelopment, which has so far resulted in a new year 7 and 8 building, a trade training centre, a college chapel and the acquisition and refurbishment of a country campus just outside Colac.

Stage three, costing $9 million, will include construction of a performing arts centre with a 500-seat auditorium fitted with the latest technical production equipment, lighting and sound, dedicated drama and music rooms, and extensive backstage facilities.

Meanwhile, the existing gym will be doubled in size and feature two full-sized basketball courts, including a show court with tiered seating, refurbished change rooms, a dedicated weights room, physical education classroom and extra storage.

Work will begin once year 12 exams are finished in mid-November and the new performing arts centre and gym should be ready in time for the 2017 school year.

Principal Andrew Watson said that once the expansion was complete, the school would be able to accommodate 1600 students. It currently has 1200.

“Our buildings have been designed to cater for enrolment growth in line with the expanding urbanisation in the area,” he said.

Following the completion of stage three, the school will begin construction of a new senior school building, completion of student services, including a cafeteria-style canteen, and construction of a year 9 building.
