An automatic sprinkler system has prevented a factory fire in Truganina from being much worse.

Fire crews responded to an alarm at the factory in Leakes Road just before 9pm on Tuesday night and arrived to find a large amount of smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters wearing oxygen masks located the fire in machinery and metal shelving and said the sprinkler system had stopped it from spreading further.

Aerial trucks were called in to help 30 firefighters battle the blaze, which took an hour to bring under control.

Crews remained at the scene overnight to extinguish the fire and clear the area of smoke.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
