The Point Cook RAAF base scored the ultimate collector’s item last week when a carbon-fibre, full-size replica Mark VIII Spitfire in 79 Squadron colours landed.
The aircraft, which was built in England and freighted by ship to Melbourne via Singapore, has been placed on a pole in front of the RAAF museum’s headquarters building.
The Friends of the RAAF Museum spent three years raising money from various groups and companies to get the Spitfire for the museum. The replica Spitfire caps off a big month at Point Cook’s RAAF Museum.
In early April, the Royal Australian Air Force’s elite formation aerobatic display team, the Roulettes, took to the skies over Point Cook with their masterful displays.
The museum’s interactive flying displays also returned for the first time in six months with the completion of tarmac resurfacing works.
