With 12 babies born at Werribee Mercy Hospital on Sunday, it was an extra-special Mother’s Day for staff and families.
The hospital’s postnatal maternity unit was full after all the bundles of joy came into the world.
Out of the infants born at Werribee Mercy on Sunday, the heaviest baby weighed 3945 grams and the lightest – who is being cared for in the Special Care Nursery – just 2020 grams.
A little girl named Aviona Callie was the first baby born at Werribee Mercy Hospital on Mother’s Day, the daughter of Paula and Eddie Dhar of Williams Landing.
Aviona arrived in the world at 3.26am, after a two-hour labour, weighing 3.89 kilograms.
She was born at 38 weeks and six days old.
Baby Aviona is sister to a 19-month old with a similar name – Avonia.
In something of a coincidence, Mrs Dhar was actually born on Mother’s Day at Bega District Hospital in 1986.
Mrs Dhar said that at the time, there was a seven-day celebration dedicated to mums known as “Mothering Week”.
She was born on the first Sunday of that week, which is now called Mother’s Day.
Mrs Dhar said she actually predicted that Aviona might also be born on Mother’s Day.
“As soon as we found out we were pregnant, I guessed she would arrive on 9 May,” Mrs Dhar said.
Another set of parents whose child was born on Mother’s Day is Manpreet and Gurpreet, who live in Wyndham Vale.
Their baby girl, Gurmeer, was born one day early after a 14-hour labour, weighing 3.85 kilograms.
Gurmeer is a little sister to Gurmack.
