When eight-year-old Sophia first laid eyes on Socks, it was love at first sight.
Sophia’s family adopted the three-year-old greyhound about a month ago as part of the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).
GAP, run by groups including Greyhound Racing Victoria, is aimed at finding homes for greyhounds once they are retired from racing.
Sophia said that she had wanted a dog since she was “very young” and was delighted to meet Socks.
“When I saw her, I loved her straight away,” she said.
Sophia’s mother, Daisy, said Socks has quickly became a part of the family.
“She loves to play with Sophia and she loves tennis balls,” Ms Lima said.
“Initially, Socks was a bit shy, now she’s coming out of her shell. She’s adjusting really well and we love her.”
Ms Lima said the family decided to adopt a greyhound after considering other dog breeds.
“We did some research and thought greyhounds would suit our lifestyle – they are calm and easy to care for,” she said.
“For sure we would encourage people to think about adopting a greyhound that needs a home – they are great and they are lovely.”
On Sunday, April 29, GAP will celebrate National Adoption Day across Australia.
The Meadows, at 80 Northcorp Boulevard in Broadmeadows, will hold an adoption day between 11am and 3pm.
The event is free but attendees must register. Details: nationalgreyhoundadoptionday.com.au/
