Alamanda K-9 students have enjoyed life on the water in a program that teaches children sailing basics.
Two groups of 20 grade 5 and 6 Alamanda students took part in the school sailing program at Wyndham Harbour, spending two-and-a-half days learning about rigging a boat, water safety and sailing games.
Adam Gristwood, from Australian Sailing, said the organisation was hoping to offer classes to other school groups.
“It’s nice in the harbour, with safe and enclosed waters – great for teaching kids how to sail,” he said.
“It really gives the students a lot of important life skills, gets them outdoors, working as part of a team.
“The key skills that they get out of it would be water safety awareness, self-reliance, problem solving and decision making and confidence – it’s really about building those core personal skills.
“We’re getting to expose students to an experience that they wouldn’t usually have the chance to get involved in.”
