Skyrail suggestion for Wyndham

Skyrail should be explored as an alternative rail option to help eliminate the need for level crossings in Wyndham, a councillor says.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow, who manages council’s roads and transport portfolio, said it was time to have a “grown-up conversation” about the idea.

“Communities over on the other side of Melbourne are up in arms about it, and I understand that, but we’re a little different on this side,” he said.

“We have the Australian Standard Gauge [freight rail] running through here, but if we removed that from the Werribee line, I would say elevated rail could be a cheaper and more logical option.”

Cr Goodfellow said he was neither in favour nor against the idea but believed there should be discussion.

“Some detail needs to be seen before anything happens,” he said. “Good business cases put forward.”

As the state Liberal opposition campaigns against skyrail in the eastern suburbs, Cr Goodfellow, a Liberal councillor, said his duty was to govern “without fear and favour” and his affiliations with the party had nothing to do with council business.

The state government has said that the Cherry Street and Cottrell Street level crossings in Werribee will be removed by the end of the Andrews government’s second term.
