Pupils at a Werribee school have worked together to create a colourful Indigenous Community Art Project: The Six Seasons.
Throughout this year, Wyndham Park Primary School has been conducting an artist-in-residence project with indigenous artist Edwina Green.
Students from grades 3 to 6 have collaborated with Ms Green to pay homage to the six seasons – which are traditionally marked by indigenous Australians living in the southwest of Australia, as part of a yearly cycle – in the school art project.
The pupils have painted water tanks located throughout the school grounds with murals reflecting the six seasons, which are known as Birak (first summer – season of the young), Bunuru (second summer – season of adolescence) , Djeran (autumn – season of adulthood), Makuru (winter season of fertility), Djilba (first spring – season of conception) and Kambarang (second spring – season of birth).
Aboriginal people in Victoria have lived their lives according to these seasons for thousands of years.
Wyndham mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, attended an assembly at the school to celebrate the completion of the Indigenous Community Art Project last week.
The paint used in creating the murals was donated by Haymes Paint.
