Sisters Bree and Samantha Wolany have set themselves a challenge – to raise $25,000 to help find a cure for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
When their father, Rick, was diagnosed with the relatively rare and debilitating neurological disorder in August last year, Bree says she didn’t know what to think.
“We had never heard of the disease before and didn’t know what dad was up against. Once we did our research and realised it was untreatable and with no cure, my family was absolutely devastated.”
PSP is sometimes referred to as atypical Parkinsonism. It affects parts of the brain that control balance, walking, eye movement, speech and swallowing. It also affects vision and motor function.
Mr Wolany is a popular Wyndham identity who became known for his support and financial contributions to local charities and sports groups.
The Wolany sisters will bring their fundraising efforts to Wyndham this weekend, with a family fun day scheduled for Hoppers Crossing Sports Club on Sunday, starting at 2.30pm.
The girls will also take on the Melbourne Marathon next month. Their efforts celebrate their father’s generosity, and all funds will go to treatments and, hopefully, finding a cure for PSP.
