Single, and laughing it

This Werribee comedian is using single fatherhood as the punchline for his latest stand-up performance.

Brett Hunter will take to the stage at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his new show, Single Fatherhood, offering insights on bringing up his son and dating, notably through Tinder.

The 33-year-old says the show is an exaggerated case of art imitating life.

“Some of it is made up and some of it’s true,” he said.

“I grew up in Prahran until I was about five and I used to break into cars and be a bit of a terror.

“Mum said, ‘That’s it, I need to take you to a good place’, and she took me to Werribee – everyone just loves that.”

Mr Hunter, who recently returned from performing a series of shows in New Zealand, is also working with fellow comedian Doug Chappell on a pilot for a TV show and has just started radio work for a community station.

This year is his second Melbourne International Comedy Festival run, following a successful debut last year.

“I love performing to a home crowd, because that’s where you’ve started and when you’re in Melbourne a lot of your friends come along as well.

“I get more nervous if one friend is in the crowd, compared to 100 strangers, but I don’t get as nervous as I used to.

“If I get the first bit right, I know I’m going to have a good gig. But if you’re having a bad gig, you keep fighting to win the crowd back.”

Single Fatherhood opens on March 29 and runs for two weeks. For more information, go to www.comedyfestival.com.au
