Members of the public apprehended a man and held him down after he attempted to steal money from a shop in Hoppers Crossing on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the store in the shopping centre on the corner of Derrimut and Heaths roads just after 2.30pm on Monday June 19, where they arrested the man.

Earlier, the 27 year old from Tarneit had jumped on the counter of the store and grabbed a small amount of money.

In attempting to flee the store, it is believed the man was tripped by a nearby shopper who was then joined by other shoppers in restraining him until police arrived.

The man is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

An employee knocked over when the man jumped on the counter was uninjured.
