An eight-week basketball program is aimed at giving Wyndham young people the skills they need to succeed on and off the court.
The True North Basketball program, which started last week, is a joint initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club, Victoria Police, Basketball Victoria and Rotary that combines sport with future employment preparation, particularly with regard to part-time jobs in sport and recreation.
Each Friday, participants will take part in fitness testing, coaching and referee courses, resume and interviewing preparation, skills workshops with NBL coaches and players – and a game or two.
Twenty year 10 to 12 students from Wyndham Central College, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, MacKillop College, Tarneit Secondary College and Point Cook Senior College have been selected to take part in the program, which is running out of Eagle Stadium.
Jesse Fyfe, from the North Melbourne Football Club, said the program was a great way to engage young people.
Wyndham Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said the initiative was giving police a chance to spend time with, and support, young people in a fun setting.
“We also hope to assist connecting these youth to the whole of community by introducing them to sporting clubs and preparing them to be able to apply for their first employment opportunities,” Acting Inspector Bitton said.
